Every Adult Should Have These five Documents Drawn Up By a Qualified Attorney

  1. A Will:  In order to make sure that your assets go to your loved ones when you pass on and not have the courts make that decision, it is important to create a Will or Revocable Living Trust with the help of a qualified attorney. If you have children, this is especially important since a Will would also state your choice of a guardian if you and your spouse should pass away. If you have a family member with special needs, this also becomes vital for their protection.
  2. Power of Attorney:  If you should ever become ill or injured to the point where you are hospitalized or otherwise unable to pay your bills and handle your day-to-day affairs, it is important to make sure that a person you trust has power of attorney for such situations so that he or she can pay your bills for you and keep things going.
  3. Medical Power of Attorney (Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare):  If you are ever too ill or injured to communicate your desires for treatment, a Medical Power of Attorney would legally allow a trusted person of your choosing to make medical decisions for you.
  4. A Living Will:  This is a document that states what medical treatments you would want or not want in an end-of-life medical situation where you are permanently incapacitated and unable to communicate. It would include what efforts you would want to keep you alive, manage pain, organ donations and other important items.
  5. List of Assets and Their Location:  When a person passes on, it is important that the surviving family members have a list of the deceased person’s assets and important papers and their location. Otherwise, those assets can be lost for good.
